Scripture

“Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”

Philippians 3:8, ESV

Lyrics
Verse 1 In the morning when I rise,
in the morning when I rise,
in the morning when I rise,
give me Jesus. Chorus Give me Jesus,
give me Jesus.
You can have all this world—
give me Jesus. Verse 2 And when I want to sing,
and when I want to sing,
and when I want to sing,
give me Jesus. Verse 3 Oh, when I am alone,
oh, when I am alone,
oh, when I am alone,
give me Jesus. Verse 4 Oh, when I come to die,
oh, when I come to die,
oh, when I come to die,
give me Jesus.

Story Behind the Song

I first heard “Give Me Jesus” through Fernando Ortega and his beautiful version of it. Of course, the song goes much further back. It is an American spiritual first printed in the 1840s and later carried to many more listeners through the Fisk Jubilee Singers.

It has now been sung through many generations. It is a very simple prayer, and a very wonderful comfort: if we are found in Christ, then we have everything.

On this new recording, we have the privilege of singing it with Sonya Isaacs. We hope you are encouraged as you listen, and that you will share it with your family and your children this month.

Something to Think About

The idea of morning runs through many of the African spirituals. It represented the resurrection and also going to heaven.

The Bible tells us that it was on the morning of the third day that Jesus rose from the dead. This fact changes all of history and everything about our lives. He has power to defeat sin and to defeat death, both of which we were powerless against.

In this day, with all its joys and all its challenges, in plenty or in want, in health or in sickness, there is one unshakable truth that steadies us in the waves of life: Jesus lives, and in Him we have everything.

May this prayer help make the path clearer today and easier to walk.

Prayer

Father in heaven,

Thank You for sending Your Son so that I may know life in all its fullness. May I not give my heart to anything less than this joy found only in Him.

In whose name I pray,
Amen.
